Task 2 19-10-2015 Skin recap Editorial and winged eyeliner
For today lesson we had a MAC makeup artist called Holly she works for MAC in SOHO Carnaby Street London she is also currently working on strictly come dancing BBC production and was a Former student at West Thames College. I found this very inspiring and inspirational and shows my dreams are achievable.
She discussed Current makeup trends with us these are listed below
Beautiful and Damned
This is pale skin with a berry or dark lip. The feel of this look is a slept in look so the makeup is not meant to be perfect so it may appear slightly smudged
Strength and Beauty
This trend is fresh dewy skin, flushed pink cheeks well blended eye shadow and soft defined brows
Loveworn
This trend is all about highlight and the current popular trend known as strobing. It is a very romantic look using mushrooms and greys on the eyes and a matt lip
Red 70's
This look is all about the red lip the colour of the season is burnt orange- rusty red. On the eyes an orange, mustard terracotta colour is popular to use to complete the final look
After explaining all 4 of these looks next Holly did a demonstration for us to watch as a class. She showed us an example of the Red 70's look. She gave us tips and advice and explained the step my step procedure then asked us to work in pairs and recreate the look for ourselves. Here are a few pictures of Holly demonstration on Kristina.
The left eye has a natural brow finish using brow gel and a small amount of eye shadow product to fill in the brow and a neat thin line of eyeliner which gives the lashes a fuller effect
The right eye has a stronger brow which she lined the outline and filled in the body of the brown with Anastasia brow product this gave a fuller effect. The eyeliner was winged and gives a beautiful finish.
I really liked this look and was excited to try and recreate it. I have never been taught eyeliner before so this was new to me.

Step by step
Before I began my makeup i neatly set up my area, I made sure that i turned my mirror lights on, that the chair was at the appropriate height, all bags were out of the way to prevent any falls and that I had washed my hands. I also had an antiseptic hand wipe available to use as when needed.
Next i prepped the skin using Kaeso calming range. I cleansed, toned and then moisturised. I massaged the skin well to encourage the blood flow.
The next stage of this look would be too add the MAC strobe cream unfortunately this product doesn't work well on darker skin tones as it can appear ashy because of this i missed this stage of the makeup on my model. Holly told us Mac are in the process of bringing out a product for darker skin tones but suggested using Mac essential oils also as long as the skin isn't very oily
I used NW50 foundation which matched Natalie’s skin tone, i buffed the product into the skin using a foundation buffing brush ensuring i had a good even base coverage.
My next step was to conceal any blemishes or dark circles. For this i mixed D13 and D14 from the Deramcolor camouflage palette i used this for the dark circles which appeared under the eye area and also on a few cheek blemishes for extra coverage. You can powder to take away shine but i was happy with how the skin looked and felt it didn't need powdering
I used a mixture of NW45 and Pam CH.2 to contour the cheek bones. I started at the top of the ear and worked my way down ensuring the product was blended well so i had no harsh lines. I highlighted in a C like shaped from the end of the brows to the cheek bone (above the contoured area) using sbc Bronzer
Once i was happy with the skin i moved on to the eye area to create a natural highlight. Using a mixture of taupe and brown eye shadow i worked into the eye crease building up the product for a natural contour, because i used a fluffy brush this naturally blended onto part of the socket as well.
My most nervous stage winged eyeliner. I used Mac Blacktrack and a small thin brush. I started at the bottom lash and drew a line diagonally upwards. I then joined up the line by drawing a fine line towards the centre of the eyelid and joined this up along the upper lash line towards the inner corner of the eye line.
I then filled in the gaps with solid black and neatened the lineup ensuring it was all connected. To neaten the line i used a slanted brush with a small amount of concealer product to straighten the edge. Due to timing of the lesson i had to leave my look at this stage so didn't manage to finish the complete trend due to only having 30 minuets
I did not manage to finish this look however i was happy with my first attempt on Black skin and winged eyeliner. I was extremely nervous about both but with more and more practice my confidence will grow. At first i found the colour match tricky as i didn't want to make my models skin look ashy. Unfortunately we didn't have the correct range of colours in our college kit so i used some of Holly's NW50 foundation. When i have the money i am going to invest in a wider range of colours to cover all skin tones. I also felt i could have gone a few shades darker with my contouring however i didn't have the colour availability in my kit. I only managed to complete one eyeliner due to the time scale of the lesson but i am happy i have learnt the basic technique. If i had more time i would of finished the eyes with a light coat of mascara and a classic red lip to complement Natalie’s skin tone.
Overall i enjoyed this but i know eyeliner is something i need to work on and practice with different eye shapes. I have tried to practice eyeliner daily on myself but i am never happy with the look.Eyeliner is my biggest struggle in makeup. I can normally achieve one ok eye but i can never match the two up. Once i finally master the skill i think i will feel alot more confident as this is a look alot of people want to wear
