Term 2 Week 1 11th January Contrasting eyeshadow

Today was our first lesson of term two!

I cant believe how quickly it has come around. Holly began the lesson by talking us through this terms project Cover Girl. I idea for this term is too create our own magazine cover. We will need to source a model and photographer and this is a completely independent project. It is very exciting but at the same time daunting. It means I have to put myself out there which I struggle with because I lack confidence in my own work. This is slowly improving and I have already seen an improvement in my skills.

This is Hollys final image. It is beautifulEndFragment

The aim of todays lesson was to create a contrasting eye make up using colour theory. A colour wheel can be seen below however I have a separate blog post in more detail. Contrasting colours gel well together. In colour theory we learn opposites attract this can make a difference between normal eye makeup and eye catching makeup that pops with the wow factor

Contrast is important and it makes something stand out. Understanding the colour wheel will make a makeup artist life a lot easier

Holly did a demonstration today on Jo. She used yellow and purple these are opposite each other on the colour wheel so therefore they are contrasting colours. The effects are amazing.

To save time holly didn’t demonstrate the skin and went straight to the eye makeup. She started by using a purple in the crease of the eye basically lining the crease. Next she filled the eye with a white pencil and coloured the lid this is to help make the yellow stand out it acts as a base.

She pat the yellow on top ensuring it was highly pigmented. To finish she blend out the purple using a lighter shade of purple for a more blended look adding an additional colours to make it stand out

Next it was my turn. I looked at a few images on google for inspiration

Using my Kyrolan pencil i colured the whole lid white. I did this to help intensifiy to pigmentation of the eye shadow

I started by patting yellow eye shadow from the centre of the lid to the inner eye.

Next i applied purple in the crease of the eye socket and blened the product with a fluffy brush. I started with the medium shade purple so i could build on my colour.

I continued to build up the product and buffed out in a sidewards V simlar to a smokey eye thecnique. I used MAC in the outer corners to add more of a contrast and blened MUA in the centre to create the gradual contrast

I patted more yellow on the lid to intensify

Underneath the eye I used the yellow from the inner corner to the middle and the purple mac from the middle to the outer corner I then blended this using the fluffy brush again

I cleaned any fall out using a cotton bud

Next I used mac face and body c1 over the entire face and concealed any blemishes with

I powdered with kyrolan translucent power as i found my models skin appeared slightly shinny

Finally i used xx as a slight contour to add definition

Overall i was happy with this look. It is something that is new to me and I've never tried before. I love experimenting with colours in makeup and i think it is a really effective dramatic look. I could of improved the coverage of the skin however i decided to spend more time blending the eyeshadow as it is something I find difficult. I feel i blended the products well but could of done with a more dramatic contrast this is mainly due to the pigmentation. Adding a pigment would of helped this.

From looking at the images i need to work on symmetrically on both eyes as they are very slightly different.

When i comes to eye makeup i am not very adventurous so this was out of my comfort zone but i enjoyed completing this look and i think it is actually very beautiful

I have practised this look again using different contrasting colours and a different style of eye makeup

The more i practice with colour the better i feel. It is completly out of my comfort zone but i can see myself improving and am enjoying using the new techniques I have learnt

I was happy with the blue but i feel the orange needed to be more intense to create a better contrast to be more effective. Im starting to feel alot more confident with colour
