VOGUE History

The first issue of Vogue was published in America in 1892. A first it was as weekly high-society journal, by Arthur Baldwin Turnure for New York City’s social elite. The Original Vogue covered issues such as the local social scene, and social etiquette it also include reviews of books, plays, and music.

Conde Naste Publishers took over the magazine in 1909. They then changed the main focus of the Magazine too Women they transformed it by focusing on beauty, composure, and etiquette. The Volumes were bigger and the prices of issues increased.

The First World War made delivery of Vogue difficult and because of this in 1916 the printing of Vogue started in England. In 1920 the first issue of Vogue was released

Vogue quickly became known for its individual photographs and high editorial quality. They were known for hiring the best photographers and as a result produced highly sophisticated front covers which are famous and well known to date. Vogue covers are some of the most well-known. Many celebrites aspire to be on the front cover of Vogue if they get onto Vogue they believe they have made it.

Vogue was the first magazine to use color Photography on its front covers. Drawings were always used for the front covers but in 1932 American Vogue used a colored front cover.

The World’s best photographers - Irwin Penn and Guy Burden, Richard Avedon and Norman Parkinson, Helmut Newton and Peter Lindberg they went on to became Vogue’s sponsors.

Another change the magazine brought was in the 1960s it started using different style female models. It stopped using more shapely figures to highlight thin, gender-neutral figures. To this day thin is what is deemed as attractive although thankfully this is starting to change. August’s addition of Vogue in 1974 was the first cover to picture an African American model.

In 1988 Anna Wintour became its Chief Editor of the America Vogue magazine. Her talent along with her determination and efficiency, reproduced in The Devil Wears Prada movie. Anna Wintour changed Vogue magazine covers she did this by emphasizing the woman’s whole body rather than just her face. In the magazine now you see a lot more full body shots whereas before it was face and shoulders. As a magazine they also started to use Hollywood actresses instead of the traditional fashion models.
